We are VERY excited to announce that Yoga for CrossFitters is going to start back up in the gym on Thursday nights.
WHAT: 1 hour Yin yoga/mobility class
WHERE: In the gym, for those of you who weren’t around last winter, it’s actually really sweet in the gym with the heat on, the overhead lights off and the little lights on 🙂
WHEN: It’s on Mindbody: Thursday’s @ 6:45pm after open gym, starting next Thursday, November 3rd. We will run it every Thursday up until December 8th (Christmas related scheduling conflicts after this). If it’s a big success, we will continue in the new year.
WHY: Seriously, why not? One of the things that people struggle with the most in terms of mobility is knowing what to and actually spending enough time getting it done. What you guys like about CrossFit is getting to just show and be told what to do. Well, this is the mobility version of this.
HOW MUCH: It’s included in your unlimited passes.
WHO: Mel K. !
Mel K. is a staple in the 7am class and is also a certified Yoga Instructor. She did her teacher training at the Yandara Institute in Baha, Mexico, and additional training with Paul Grilley in the U.S. She also currently teaches yoga classes at quest for the varsity teams. There may be the odd class that Mel can’t make, and on those days I will run you guys through an hour of mobility exercises that are specific to what we are up to in the programming around that time.
Mel will lead us through a 1 hour Yin Yoga session: “Yin yoga, so named because of its correspondence to the Taoist concept of yin, is a very distinct style of Chinese yoga similar to hatha yoga that stretches the connective tissue (joints). The practice is characterized by passive asanas held for several minutes each.” -Wikipedia
In short, it’s holding multijoint connective tissue stretches for a nice long time to get some really great deep releases. This has always been my favourite type of yoga because of it’s “lie around on the floor and stretch” atmosphere. Mel promises no chanting 😉 She will structure her classes to best suit the movements to those we are performing in the gym around that time.
WHAT YOU NEED: Technically you don’t need anything, but if you have a yoga mat bring one. Otherwise you will be on the rubber mat flooring. If you have a bolster or pillow (regular bed pillow works just fine) bring that as well. It’s really helpful to have a pillow, especially if you are quite immobile. Dress in comfy layers in case the gym is cooler that day.
THE NITTY GRITTY: This is an amazing opportunity that Mel is providing us. Take advantage of it. The sign up schedule is online. That said, treat it like the rest of your training… if you sign up, show up. Last minute cancels and no-shows are not cool. Showing up late is also not cool.
