Part of my training for my race this fall is finding different (real) foods that I can eat while running that taste good and give me good fuel… I avoid Gels at all costs.
Here is an energy ball that I made up from scratch the other day. I know that I’m reinventing the wheel here, but it was fun to be specific with what I wanted in them. They were REALLY easy to make.
In a food processor I mixed:
– 3/4 cup (loose, not packed) of pitted organic dates
– 3/4 cup whole organic walnuts
– 3 tablespoons of shredded coconut
– 3 tablespoons of organic chia seeds (bulk section at Nester’s)
– 1 scoop of whey protein
– 1 tsp of salt
– 1 tsp of lemon extract (I might try just using fresh lemon next time to compare the flavour… I was aiming for lemon lara bar deliciousness)
You could really do a lot of variations of this… although I definitely recommend trying the date/lemon combo.
I mixed it all in the food processor to see what kind of texture I was dealing with. It was somewhat moist but not enough to shape yet so I added just enough agave to make it stickier… maybe a tablespoonish.
I mixed the agave in and then shaped it into little balls for the purpose of having single bite portions.
I put them in the fridge for a few hours, and then wrapped them individually in tin foil so that they were easy to put in my pack. These proportions of ingredients made 10 small balls.
I found them delicious, easy to chew and swallow while on the move (don’t get disgustingly stuck in the back of your throat the way gels do), and very digestible. Over the course of 2.5 hours I ate 3 of them plus some ham (I know, weird, but it’s saltiness is surprisingly palatable in the circumstance) that I also had pieced up some tinfoil. It was a perfect little run meal.
